Sarah Palin Overwhelmingly Booed at Philadephia Flyers Game

Ouch.

The New York Times writes that Palin was "greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd." The Associated Press report, which will likely be seen in newspapers around the country, reads as follows:

Palin was booed when she first stepped on the ice before the Flyers' home opener against the New York Rangers to drop the ceremonial first puck. Palin, the Alaska governor and self-described "hockey mom," is trying to turn Pennsylvania into a red state.

Forbes, no bastion of liberalism, is even harsher in its writeup:

Palin Gets Booed in Philly!  This is sure to be the headline splashed across television and newspapers Sunday morning, the day after the Republican Vice Presidential candidate and hockey mom from Alaska drops the puck at the ceremonial face-off for the Philadelphia Flyers' home opener on Saturday night at the soon-to-need-a-name-change Wachovia Center. What will be missing from the news: the jeers were deserved.

Even Fox News was forced to admit "There were audible boos over the very loud music and some in the crowd had their thumbs down."

Just to step back and think about the optics of this for a moment, perhaps it will be the case that Philadelphians respect Palin for going in front of a hostile crowd. Then again, it's never a good thing for a candidate to earn headlines describing the nature and intensity of booing -- particularly when the stories don't come in the traditional news section of the paper or television report, which draws politics junkies unlikely to be swayed in one direction or the other, but rather in the sports section, read by more casual voters whose impressions of the candidate would more likely be shaped by this coverage. At the least, this moment in time should undercut the notion that Palin will bring a disproportionate number of hockey fans to the Republican ticket this fall.

Re: Sarah Palin Overwhelmingly Booed (none / 0)

Just shows how stupid the McCain camp is... Everyone knows what Philly fans are like... They threw snowballs at Santa Claus for Chrissake!  Batteries were a common object at old veteran's stadium...

If you wanted to do a hockey event in PA, you should have gone to Pittsburgh... She would have had a much better reception there...  Philly is Obama country... they should have known that!

Re: I knew someone... (none / 0)

...would bring up the Santa Clause booing incident.  It happened when snow prevented a halftime Christmas pageant from taking place.  Instead, someone was hastily recruited to dress as Santa and jog onto the field with some cheerleaders.  "Santa" had dark hair, a tacky fake beard and was skinny, the suit hung on him.

I'm tired of the constant criticism of Philly fans. A month ago I attended a football game at Ohio State where "real" Americans of the midwest booed a 22 year quarterback who is not paid a dime to play football.  People boo athletes everywhere in America but it is only Philly fans who are considered boorish and obnoxious.

That being said, I thought they were wrong tonight to boo Palin, as Palin had her little girl with her.  I resented the politicizing of a hockey game but the person who should be booed is the owner, Jay Snyder.

Dude, you guys cheered for a future Hall of Famer lying paralyzed on the field with not only a career ending injury but what could have been a life ending one.

Anyone that doesn't think Philly fans are the worst in sports are either from Philly or...from Philly?

...the drug abusing rapist, I assume?  Not exactly a sympathetic figure and it was not known how serious his injury was.

I stand by what i said-fans all over America boo athletes are rarely criticized for it.  The media loves the narrative of Philly fans as obnoxious boors but then, the media thinks that fans should kiss the butts of the millionaires who are paid to play professional sports.  They decry anyone who doesn't share that view.

And yes, I grew up in Philly.

Contrast (2.00 / 1)

To the Philadelphia Inquirer headline also from today. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/breaki ng/20081011_Thousands_cheer_Obama_at_fou r_Phila__stops.html

Thousands cheer Obama at four Phila. stops

Supporters turned out by the thousands, an estimated 20,000 in West Philadelphia alone. They cheered his speeches and jumped for joy as his motorcade passed.

"No question, the mayor [Michael Nutter] and I were clamoring to get him to do this kind of day," said Gov. Rendell, who, along with Nutter, Sen. Bob Casey Jr. and numerous other Democratic officeholders accompanied Obama on his tour. "Think of the buzz this will create."

Tony Goodwin, 58, a retired firefighter from the Logan section, already had all the buzz he needed.

"The dream is becoming a reality, thank God," said Goodwin, wearing an elaborate Obama T-shirt at Progress Plaza in North Philadelphia, where the line started forming at 11 p.m. Friday. "I've already got president and first lady shirts, five of them. If he doesn't win, I'll stroke out."

At all four stops, Obama gave a variation of the same speech. A key element was a thank-you of sorts to his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain.

On Friday, at a town hall meeting in Minnesota, McCain had drawn boos when he defended Obama as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president."

Said Obama: "Now, I want to acknowledge that Sen. McCain tried to tone down the rhetoric yesterday, and I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - Sen. McCain has served this country with honor, and he deserves our thanks for that."

For the most part, though, Obama talked about the economy, blaming the Republicans for the current crisis and laying out his own plans to cut taxes for families making less than $250,000 a year and to invest $15 billion per year in renewable energy.

"I don't quote Ronald Reagan that often, but are you better off than you were four years ago?" Obama asked the crowd outside the Mayfair Diner, his smallest of the day. "Are you better off than you were four weeks ago? We've had enough, and it's time for a change."

A McCain spokesman, Tucker Bounds, described Obama's words as "pie-in-the-sky rhetoric" and said the Democrat's tax plans would burden small business.

In the four speeches, Obama engaged in give-and-take with his audiences at times.

Actually, she seems to have switched from the lame Ayers attacks to the ridiculous infanticide attacks. Given that the most active terrorists in the US in the past two decades have been anti-abortion bombers and assassins, I don't think switching to extreme anti-choice rhetoric is actually dialing anything back in the least.

Re: Sarah Palin Booed at Philadephia Flyers Game (2.00 / 1)

Philly is one of the only 3 counties that Obama won in the primary in PA. I am not sure how well McCain did there, but in the state he got only 60 or 70 percent of the total Pug vote, even though he was the only real legitimate Republican running there.  The other votes went to Ron Paul, and Huck. So, it has a bigger than normal Obama crowd. I can't hear that much booing in the video, but I'll take everyones word for it.

by Scotch on Sat Oct 11, 2008 at 11:24:42 PM EST

Re: Sarah Palin Booed at Philadephia Flyers Game (2.00 / 0)

I would guess that a lot of Hockey fans are actually coming in from Bucks, Montgomery and Chester Counties.  The suburbs skew much more Republican at the local level, so I would not put stock in the fact that this game was full of Obama supporters from the Primaries.

Re: Sarah Palin Overwhelmingly Booed at Philadephi (none / 0)

As a Penguins fan, I'm hard pressed to say anything nice about Philly or their fans.  But, in this case I don't think it happened just because she was in Philly.  Pittsburgh may not have been much better for her.

Fact is that hockey fans, particularly those who can afford tickets to games, tend to be more white collar than most other pro sports.  This has been the case for years, and was recently confirmed again: http://biz.yahoo.com/iw/081002/0439417.h tml

So, the overlap between the wing of the Republican base that Palin most appeals to, and the people you will see at the game, are pretty thin.  And nowhere I've been have hockey fans been slow to voice their opinion...

All in all, well deserved and a dumb idea both to have Palin drop the puck, and even more so for her to subject her daughters to it.  I genuinely believe that decision probably did reduce the volume of the boos, so maybe it was the right political move.

At least her younger seemed a bit oblivious to it in the video.

Re: Sarah Palin Overwhelmingly Booed (2.00 / 1)

What did people expect?  In PA, before Couric (where America first really saw how dumb Palin is), it was a 2 or 3 point race.  Afer the Couric interview, it immediately jumped to 7 or 8, and after her train wreck of a debate, it immediately jumped to 12 and no poll post-debate has been less than double digits.  Of course there have been other things like the economy affecting the race, but I do think that Palin is a large factor in the PA polling numbers of the McCain ticket plummeting.  That stupid but cute act (where winking at the camera is a legitimate debate strategy) and far-right fundie beliefs might play well in some places around the country, but PA is not one of those places.  She personally ensures that PA is not in play, and there is no one I know that likes her around here at all.

BTW, I watched the game tonight on the Flyers' Comcast Sportsnet and they cut all of the on-ice mics from the audio, so all you heard on TV during her ceremony was the announcers and some background music, but none of the crowd.

I loved how the Flyers on the bench just sat there disinterested when she walked out. They didn't even bother to stand and very few were banging their sticks to make any noise for her. Sure, they're mostly Canadians and Europeans, but it was clear they couldn't have cared less about her.

Oh, and the Flyers gave up four goals in the first period. This woman really is cursed.
